Flexible teaching location for music teachers in Zurich - Welcome to Notenloft

Teaching music students at various locations - a model that has many advantages for music teachers, especially if they teach private lessons as freelancers, have students from different regions or the volume of lessons varies over time. The founders of Notenloft, Cosima and Brigitte, explain the idea behind their business model and how music teachers can benefit.

The Notenloft in Zurich-Oerlikon

What is Notenloft and who is behind it?

Notenloft in the northern part of Zurich offers musicians flexible practice and teaching spaces for rent. Rooms for up to six people can be booked for as little as 30 minutes and every quarter of an hour. We are both ambitious hobby musicians and play trumpet, viola, and tuba. Three years ago, we had the idea to fill a gap in the market and offer passionate musicians a place where they can make music undisturbed and flexibly.

How are the rooms equipped?

We have seven rooms of different sizes for one to six people. The rooms are very high quality, soundproofed, and have professional interior acoustics. Each room is equipped with ventilation and has daylight. A piano is available for use in one room and a drum set in another. Sanitary facilities, a lounge area, snacks, and always clean and perfectly prepared rooms complete the offer for our visitors.

Who makes music in the Notenloft?

Hobby musicians, professionals, and music teachers play music with their students. These are often people who do not have the opportunity to make music undisturbed at home or professionals who are preparing for a performance. Music teachers without their own studio can teach their students flexibly.

What problem do you solve for music teachers in particular?

Renting your own studio can be very expensive, the fixed costs have to be covered every month. Renting in another studio also has financial risks and the quality is not always where it should be. If you rent space on short notice, you have to arrange for the keys to be handed over each time, and if your schedule overlaps, you are often at a disadvantage. Teachers spend a lot of time in transit from one student to another rather than teaching. So we address different needs with our offer.

How else do teachers benefit from the Notenloft concept?

There are no fixed costs. A room is only booked when there’s an active student. In addition, a teacher can expand his or her own radius and teach students in new regions. With us, a room can also be booked at very short notice, either online or by phone.

Isn't it too expensive to have to rent a room every time?

If you're booked from morning to night with music students, it's cheaper to have your own studio, depending on your personal situation. For all others, we are an option to consider. A full cost calculation is worthwhile. Rent, electricity, maintenance, instruments, cleaning, insurance, furniture, and of course idle time and vacations must be included. All this is included in our price. From CHF 24 per hour, you are ready to go!

What is left at the end for a teacher? Is teaching still worthwhile at all?

That depends on many different factors, which we have already mentioned above. In any case, it is worthwhile to do a quick calculation. In this example for piano lessons, all the costs mentioned above (electricity, furniture, cleaning, etc.) are already included:

How can teachers who teach at Matchspace Music benefit from this offer

It's very simple. At Matchspace Music, music teachers can create different "courses" in the same profile. This allows each teacher to specify multiple teaching locations, for example, one with the Notenloft address in Zurich North. The flexible pricing allows the cost of room rental to be included in the lesson price.

Is Notenloft the only place to rent a room by the hour?

No. If you search the Internet, you will find various providers who rent out rooms for music lessons by the hour. There are big differences in price and quality. With some providers, you have to take care of handing over the keys, others charge higher prices for music lessons than for practicing, and others have a minimum rental period of three hours, for example. Some also require longer rental periods of up to twelve months in advance. In any case, our offer is unique in this form so far. Discover now the offer and the rooms of Notenloft on
